The short answer

Best overall window: late February through early June. Working weather is tolerable, the pre-storm rush has not started, and slots are easy to get.

Hardest windows: the week a Gulf storm is forecast, the two weeks after one makes landfall, and the Medical Center turnover weeks in late June and early July.

The price is the same in all of them. Sofa $126, queen mattress $103, quarter truck $241, half truck $431, full truck $732, $75 visit minimum. No same-day surcharge, no weekend rate, no storm-week rate.

January and February

Quiet, and comfortable to work in. This is when exercise equipment moves in both directions — new machines arrive and last year's treadmill finally leaves the garage. A treadmill is $115, an elliptical $97, a home gym $241 and a weight set $93.

It is also the tail of the holiday-delivery cycle: the new sofa arrived in December and the old one has been in the garage ever since. Deal with it now rather than in August, because a Houston garage does upholstery no favors.

March through early June: the best window

The single most useful thing in this section: clear the garage and the patio before hurricane season gets serious. Not because we charge more later — we do not — but because you want the space free and the yard clear on short notice, and because in the week of a forecast everybody in the metro wants the same thing at once.

What to move: patio furniture you no longer use ($89 a table, $30 a chair, $53 an umbrella and base), the grill ($53 propane, $59 charcoal), the fire pit ($56), planters ($45), and whatever is occupying the garage bay you will want for the patio set. A two-bay garage clear is usually $587 or $732 on the truck ladder.

This is also spring listing season. Realtors and sellers across the inner loop and the master-planned communities want houses cleared before photography, and a clear garage sells a Houston house better than almost anything else you can do for the money.

June through November: storm season

Two distinct patterns. Before a storm, everyone wants to secure the yard and free the garage, in the same forty-eight hours. After one, entire neighborhoods need ground floors emptied at once.

Nothing about our pricing changes in either case, and there is no emergency rate. What changes is availability, and there is no way around that when a whole band of the metro needs a truck in the same two weeks. If you are in a flood-prone area, having the garage already clear before June is worth more than any scheduling trick.

After water: carpet removal is $71 a room, rolled carpet $68, drywall $37 a sheet or small bundle, and the furniture prices as normal. Most flooded ground floors land at three-quarters of a truck or more.

Late June and early July: the Medical Center weeks

The apartment belt around the Texas Medical Center empties and refills on the academic calendar — residents matching in, fellows rotating out, travel nurses finishing contracts. Thousands of leases end in the same handful of days.

If you are moving in that window, book the cleanout a week ahead. If you are not, avoid those weeks for anything discretionary — the whole area is busy and parking around the complexes is worse than usual.

July and August: book the early slot

Nothing wrong with summer work, but take the first appointment of the day. By the afternoon the heat and humidity make everything slower, and a garage or an attic in a Houston afternoon is genuinely hard on people.

Attic jobs in particular should be morning jobs. There is no price difference — it is purely about the crew working safely and the job finishing in one visit.

September through December

Storm season runs deep into the autumn here, so the pre-storm logic still applies through November. From late November the pattern shifts to holiday deliveries — new furniture in, old furniture to the garage — and to households clearing a spare room before guests arrive.

Early December is a good slot if you want a room emptied before the family lands. Sofa $126, loveseat $119, a bed frame at $68 for a metal one, and a medium pile of everything else at $129.

Day of the week and time of day

Weekday mornings are the easiest slots to get in this metro, and they also avoid the worst of the traffic — a crew crossing from one side of the Beltway to the other at five in the afternoon is not getting anywhere quickly.

Saturdays fill first, all year. Same-day is often possible and carries no surcharge, but ask early in the day rather than at four in the afternoon.

Whatever you pick, the number is the same. That is the point of publishing it.

Frequently asked questions

Is junk removal cheaper at certain times of year in Houston?

No. Prices are the same all year — a sofa is $126 and a full truck $732 in February and in September alike. What changes seasonally is availability, not cost.

When should I clear the garage?

Between March and early June, before hurricane season gets serious. You want the bay free so patio furniture and the grill can come in on short notice, and you do not want to be booking behind a forecast.

Do you charge more after a storm?

No. There is no emergency or storm-week rate. Slots get scarce because an entire band of the metro needs trucks at once, but the published price does not move.

What is the best slot in summer?

The first appointment of the day. Houston afternoons in July and August are hard on people, and attic and garage work in particular should be done in the morning.

Can I book same-day?

Often, and there is no same-day surcharge. Ask early in the day — same-day availability is thin by mid-afternoon, especially in Medical Center turnover weeks.
